My volunteering journey began in high school when I started doing reading buddies for coast capital. It was such an amazing experience for me, I feel in love with the children. One of the girls I had was super quiet, she barely talked to the other children and to me. However, over the course of the program we started to create this bond, I could tell she could trust me because she started to open up to me. This moment was when I knew I wanted to become a teacher because growing up I was a shy girl as well and for me I never had anyone to open up to like that. I’m so grateful I got to experience this because from then on I knew teaching was something I wanted to pursue.

Another volunteering experience I would never forget was coaching basketball at YMCA. I’m very passionate about playing sports so this was really exciting for me because I could teach other students to play a game I love to play! I was the assistance coach which meant I was helping out the main coach with practices and games. Practices were fun because here students were able to have fun but also learn some new skills. I think just helping out the students who were struggling was so meaningful, you could tell the students loved it when they accomplished a new skill. Seeing them smile and enjoy themselves was our main goal as coaches!

Playing Soccer

I have been playing soccer since I was 5 years old, I’m so grateful for my parents because they kept me active since then. I still play soccer and I feel like I’v grown so much as a person. Soccer is all about team work and having that trust in your teammates. I think this is such a great quality to adapt in a classroom as well. Having the students working together as a team makes learning fun but also helps the students who are struggling to do it on their own. When students are able to work with their peers they build trusting relationships with each other and that grows their learning.
