10 ii. Improving education attainment levels and success rates.
     iii. Developing culturally appropriate curricula.

For the first one “Improving education attainment levels and success rates” (Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada, 2015), I would start right in the beginning of the school year. Getting to know your students’ needs is crucial for them to succeed in their learning. I think understanding your students learning and being involved every step of the way gives the student the idea that someone will always be there for them through difficult and easy times. This goes   for their learning and also anything else going on in their personal lives. I think having that relationship with your student makes for a great learning experience and overall success rate!

For the second one “developing culturally appropriate curricula” (Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada, 2015), I really love the idea of incorporating sharing circles to any lesson I create. It’s such a great way to see where the students are at in terms of their learning but also having them share their stories about things within their culture, community and the society around them. I think sharing circles can be done in any grade level and any subject, but for an example I would do it during the first week of school which is the “getting to know your students” stage. I would have a sharing circle every day that week and I would incorporate different topics that had the students learn more about each other and for me to understand their backgrounds and where they came from. I really want this activity to build a sense of community, an inclusive learning environment and to have healthy relationships with me and with one another. I think incorporating sharing circles right in the beginning of the year has the students feel comfortable with one another and has them sharing things in which they would normally not share.

  • This really had me thinking about how I would incorporate indigenous studies in each of my lessons. I really love the idea of sharing circles because students are able to share their thoughts, ideas and stories in a safe environment.
